The English Church was brought more closely under the European model with the Norman invasion of 1066. In the late Middle Ages the first protests against an increasingly worldly and politically ambitious Church began to show themselves in England. Followers of John Wycliffe challenged the idea that God could only be approached through the priesthood, and the new literacy which had spread through the aristocracy and bourgeoisie meant that the priests no longer had a monopoly on Biblical knowledge. Eventually England and Scotland became Protestant countries, again as much for political as religious reasons, but Catholicism remained strong in Ireland, parts of Wales, the north of England and the west of Scotland. Scotland became Presbyterian with a Calvinist theology, while England had an evolving episcopal system, which began as national Catholicism and gradually moved towards Lutheran-ism. Ireland came to link Catholicism with national freedom. Under Cromwell there was an attempt to create a single State church in Britain under the Presbyterian system of governance, with a new statement of faith the "Westminster Confession".
